We know that “Superfood” is a word so oversaturated in the health landscape, your eyeballs are probably rolling back in your head just reading it. It’s one of those words that seems great – who doesn’t want their food, or rather absolutely anything, to be super? But what does it actually mean? At NOKA, we don’t like hyperbole, but we do love Superfoods. Here’s why. Superfoods get their “super” quality from the myriad of benefits packed into one single source of nutrition. Digestive health? Check. Balancing blood sugar? Check. Beautiful, glowy skin? Check, check, check. And so on.
It’s easy to think Superfoods are “generally good for you”, in the way we all know we should eat more greens. They are. But we’re also believers in Hippocrates’ saying, “Let Food Be Thy Medicine”. Reports published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine highlight some of the ways that Camu Camu and Maqui Berry, two of the Superfoods we blend into our NOKA smoothies, can help fight illness. Their superpower lies in the concentrated amounts of anti-oxidants.
Anti-oxidants is another buzzword that we all know are “good for us” – but why? Anti-oxidants prevent cell damage caused by free radicals. These are by-products of our body turning food into energy, and they can wreck havoc on our systems, including altering our DNA! While free radicals have been linked to many chronic diseases and aging, anti-oxidants are the defenders of the realm. While there is no simple “eat this and you won’t get cancer” fix, we’re starting to understand the powerful impact a balanced diet of nutrient rich fruit, veggies, and whole grains can have. This is why we’ve added flax, protein, brown rice, and superfoods to our organic fruit and veg smoothies.
